In this article I reveal what I believe are the two most important ranking factors used by Google. My findings are as a result of my ongoing optimization experiments of my network of web sites on Google. The top two Google ranking factors are: 1. PageRank 2. Incoming Text Link Keywords I'll explain each in more detail and what you MUST do to maximize the effectiveness of each element. 1. PageRank PageRank is determined by the number and quality of links to a page. Both the quantity and quality of text links are important. Always try to get links from web pages with a PageRank rating of at least four. Concentrate on getting as many different quality sites as possible to link to one page on your site, usually your home page. Do not spread the links to different pages. This will maximize the PageRank of your main page, plus those of the subpages. 2. Incoming Text Link Keywords ALWAYS provide text links for linking to your site. Avoid image links. Google does index image links, but without any text for it to index, it won't help your link popularity rating for your important keywords. In addition:

using the EXACT spelling. Well, there you have it. Those are what I consider the two most important ranking factors used by Google. Other factors are considered by Google, but their importance pales in comparison to the two I have discussed in this article.

3. Make sure you're aiming for goals that are high enough! Many of my clients initially have a tendency to sell themselves short; only after discussing their potential do they see what they can truly achieve.
4. What will it take to get you there? You want to consider the steps that will get you to each of your goals.
You might need to: * hire more employees to handle the increased business * stop trading hours for money (or as many hours for money) by starting to help groups of clients rather than individuals and/or branch out into information publishing * begin recruiting clients in ways that reach out to large quantities of targeted prospects rather than focusing on less time- and cost-effective marketing methods * expand your reach outside your local area * get to know people that can help you reach your goals * start weeding out the clients you don't enjoy working with and concentrating on the ones you do, who typically bring in more for you while requiring less handholding Spell out the broad steps that you will need to make in order to move ahead, along with the amount of time it will take for you to achieve them. 5. Which skills do you need to gain in order to achieve those goals? If you want to make more money with your business with a minimum of expense, I highly recommend that you do the following: * Establish a clearly defined brand for your business, which you can use from this point forward as the foundation for literally all of your business decisions to follow. (My High-Concept Brand Bible home-study manual will walk you through all of the steps in the process.) * Improve your copywriting skills. Learning how to write effective sales copy is one of the very best ways to save yourself time and expense on your promotions. That's true whether you ever gain expert-level copywriting ability or continue to hire out all of your copywriting work in the future. Just knowing what to look out for is a tremendous help. (My FREE sales letter tutorial is a good starting point.) * Learn the ins and outs of direct marketing. This will allow you to reach a wider audience, and you will learn the nuances of sales psychology that cause your prospects to act quickly. (Don't worry -- you don't have to use cheesy hard-sell tactics, but you do need to learn how to motivate people to take action.) * Plan to expand your firm beyond your own capabilities? You'll need to learn how to manage staff, potentially handle more complex tax requirements for payroll purposes and other non-marketing related concepts that will directly result from your marketing decisions. Make sure to list all skills that you need to improve upon.
6. Assess which goals are realistic to achieve. What is viable? What isn't? If you need to learn a lot of new skills, how much time can you realistically plan to dedicate to doing so? Do you have the financial ability to afford the training?
7. Create a 1-year plan. I started with the longer-term plan because it helps you visualize the things that you truly with to achieve -- and allows you to see the significant gains you can make with concerted effort. However, you need to build some interim steps in the process, 1 year at a time. At this point you want to outline the goals that you would like to achieve in that 1-year period.
8. Map out the steps that would allow you to achieve those goals. For instance, if your goal is to gain 12 new clients this year, what will it take to reach them?
9. Add the steps in your 1-year plan to your calendar. I use Microsoft Outlook solely for the calendar function, which allows me to set up reminders and manage my time more effectively. You can also use a paper calendar or Daytimer organizer -- it's not the medium that counts, but what works best for you!
10. Assess where you are once a month, and adjust your schedule accordingly. There's no sense beating yourself up if you suffer a minor setback; just find a way to get back on schedule the following month.

Then the place to start is with an excellent press release. We will show you how. We'll briefly go over the basics because of their importance. Editors want to see things done the RIGHT way. I would bet that a lot of good releases simply get tossed out just because they aren't set up properly. To a busy editor, that all too familiar three-second glance says a lot for you and your business and if you've done your research enough to warrant that release to be placed in their newspaper or magazine or even on their website. Here are your essentials: "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE" on the top left of the page. Your contact name, phone number, e-mail address, and website follows. Double check this. No, triple check this. You want to be accurate. The headline is next, normally in bold and centered on the page. Summarize what the release is about and capture their attention. Spend almost as much time on your headline as you do writing the release. It's that important. Make sure to get those valuable keywords in there and hopefully in the first few words. Each press release starts with location, city and state and then date, month and year.) Most press releases are between 400-500 words, and no more than a page. Place your attention on adding value and people will anticipate the information you want to share. As you bring in more value, you reinforce your credibility and earn the trust of your followers. On the weeks that we don't review websites, the calls are generally "open discussion" of Internet marketing issues. Many of the joint ventures that I turn down, and many of the clients that I reject, are for the same reason. Their websites are so poorly written that I know that the websites won't convert. I rarely do outside copywriting, but I often suggest revamping their websites before they move forward. With the sites reviewed on my calls, and with the sites I look at for other reasons, I notice many of the same mistakes. Here are 12 of the most common:
1) The site has no focus. A website should be designed with its primary purpose in mind. You should have ONE thing that you'd really like most visitors to your page to do. Almost everything on that page should lead the visitors toward deciding to take that primary action. Nothing on the page should distract them and "lead them off down other trails."
2) The site has no email capture mechanism. Most honest copywriters will tell you that in most Internet marketing type niches, a 1-2% response rate to a sales letter is VERY respectable. You've worked very hard to get visitors to your site, and if you completely ignore the 98% who don't buy you're not going to be in business very long.
3) The owner is "hiding behind the website." Web surfers are skeptical and distrusting. You need to let them know that there is a real person behind the site. Give them contact information, show them your photo, and even let them hear you. You can easily add audio or video to your website, and allow it to "touch" your visitor on such a deeper level. When people hear your voice or see you talking and get to watch your body language, you communicate so much more effectively than just the written word.
4) The owner of the site offers no credentials. The very first question I ask when reading a magazine article, watching a television show, or reading a webpage, is "What makes this person qualified to teach ME this topic." Most web surfers don't trust you and believe that most Internet sites are out to rip them off. You need to show them that your experience and training make you qualified to teach them the topic. In addition to formal credentials, a professional looking website also shows that you are a serious businessperson. Don't skimp on your website’s design!
5) Not offering proof of statements. It's natural for you to say how great you and your product are. That means nothing to potential customers. Get others to share how your product improved their lives. Use media interviews and statements by officials in professional organizations to provide third-party validation.
6) Offering the wrong payment options. The majority of Internet users prefer to pay via credit card. If your product allows you to do it, and still make a satisfactory profit, consider taking orders through an answering service or call center, via fax, via snail mail, and through third party processors such as Paypal as well. Evaluate each of these options and decide which of these make sense for you.
7) Using the wrong or too many fonts. When you use different sizes and colors of letters on your webpage you need to have a real reason. When you highlight or underline text on your webpage you need to have a logical reason.
8) Using header graphics that distract from the message. Your header graphic should spell out or emphasize the main benefit of your product. It should be simple enough that the visitor is not forced to waste time trying to decipher its meaning.
9) Not focusing on benefits rather than features. Don't tell your visitor how great the product is; tell him how it will improve his life. Your testimonials should also provide concrete, and very specific, examples of how it improved someone else's life. 10) Focusing on "I" rather than "you"! Look at your webpage and make sure that it talks about the customer and his problem more than it talks about you, your company, and your products. Your customers don't really care about you. They care about how you can help them! Read through your copy and make sure that it answers that question. Make sure that you're not talking about yourself too much and that when you do talk about yourself, it's answering the question of how you can help the reader.
11) Not emphasizing the guarantee. When a customer purchases with a credit card, or through certain third-party processors, the guarantee is implied anyway. So, why not make your guarantee a selling point? If a customer goes to Visa or MasterCard and states that they are unhappy with their purchase from you, they will get their money back in most cases... and you'll pay an extra fee for the "chargeback." If a customer goes to Clickbank or Paypal with a complaint, they will end up issuing a refund in many cases.
12) Not using a P.S. Many busy surfers will jump right to the end of your webpage and read the P.S.(s). If they were somewhat pre-sold before they arrived at your page, many will go ahead and purchase at that time. Use the P.S.(s) to restate your offer, emphasize the guarantee, showcase your bonuses, and to emphasize any scarcity factor in the offer.
A well-written webpage is so pivotal to the sales process that many professional copywriters will often rewrite bad sales letters. When they discover great products that they KNOW would sell if the products’ owners just had better copy, they will often rewrite bad sales letters, pre-sell the products, and then send the "ready-to-buy" customers directly to the order form. Sites like Twitter, FaceBook, and Sokule are all the rave. Part of the reason that these sites are so popular is that the Internet can be such a lonely place. People who run online businesses from home-based offices, as I do, sometimes want to just reach out to others who understand their world. So they drop by social networking sites "just to visit." Marketers like me look at these sites with millions of users and wonder if they can't be used for something more than just socializing. We wonder if they can't have a business application as well. Social networking purist will scream "NO." They will insist that you definitely should not sell on these sites. Others teach that you use these sites to build your brand, but lure people off these sites to your marketing site and into your sales funnel. To those who wonder, "Can't I market while still being social?" my answer is "yes." The key is to do it in ways that feel natural (inoffensive) and in places where it's expected. Let me give you two quick examples: 1) Many people on sites like Twitter and Facebook are constantly pointing out online videos to their friends. They notice videos on video-sharing sites such as YouTube that are inspirational, touching, or thought provoking, and they want to share them with their friends. They see music videos of their favorite songs, or maybe really sexy videos, and it's natural to share these with online friends that they know have similar interests. What most people don't know is that there are many ways that they can get paid just by pointing out videos to their friends. I personally do this using the system at: http://GetPaidToShareVideos.com This system pay Google AdSense revenue, plus pays you in other ways just for doing something that you already do. 2) Jane Mark and Phil Basten noticed how popular Twitter was becoming, but also that Twitter wasn't designed for marketing. So they created a site very similar to Twitter, only it's set up to encourage you to market. Key differences include that it allows members to add up to five links to their favorite sites, it allows members to add their Clickbank ID and display ads for Clickbank product on which they passively earn commission, and it allows members to earn a commission when free members upgrade to membership levels that make more tools available. This site is called Sokule (pronounced "so cool"), and it is also set up to make it easier to gather a lot of followers. I have often told my students that they should not think of their Twitter following as a list - because they are not "a list." However, on Sokule, you can think of them as a list. Sokule is actually configured so that some levels of membership actually allow you to send a direct message to ALL of your followers. You are only allowed to send a direct message to all of your followers once every three days, but that does make building a following much like building a mailing list on the platform. When you set up your Sokule account, you enter three areas of interest. Those following you can find you by searching the database for others interested in the same topics that they are interested in. Presumably, those following you are interested in the same topics and would therefore welcome direct messages from you periodically. If not, they can always stop following you, just as they can on Twitter. As you can see though, the key is knowing which sites to use. It is possible to earn more than many "Internet marketers" earn selling affiliate products, just by "being social."
